The Madrid Carlos III Hospital HLIU is the unit of its kind most experienced in treatment of infectious and contagious diseases in the whole of Europe. The unit has 78 medical professionals specifically trained to care for patients suffering from infectious diseases. It has the capacity to care for two patients affected by any high-risk infectious disease simultaneously. In addition, it also has a laboratory for the collection and analysis of samples and another one for the diagnosis of microbiological samples.
The fittings carried out in these zones enable monitoring of the negative differential pressure of 10 pascals between the room and the entrance and exit locks and of 20 pascals over the entrance corridor before the entrance and exit locks. These inlet and outlet locks in turn have a negative pressure of 10 pascals with respect to the inlet zone, guiding the air flow always in the direction of the room, the inlet and outlet locks and the inlet zone. This installation admits a maximum deviation of 0.1 pascal in the laboratory and lock pressures. Regarding temperature, the maximum deviation allowed is 0.2ºC between set target and ambient temperature, while the relative humidity has a maximum deviation tolerance of 2%.
This hospital ward is classified as a level 3 biosafety area.
